Ancient Origins

Fencing traces its roots to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, where sword fighting was practiced for combat and sport. The first known fencing manual was written in 1400s Spain.

The Renaissance & Classical Fencing

In the 16th–17th centuries, Italian and French masters developed the modern rules of foil and épée. Schools of fencing spread across Europe, and the rapier became a symbol of nobility.

Olympic Era

Fencing has been part of the modern Olympic Games since 1896 (men’s foil) and women’s fencing was introduced in 1924. Today, the sport is governed by the Fédération Internationale d’Escrime (FIE).
