How to choose your first equipment correctly
The mask is the most important piece of protection. For beginners, a standard FIE 350N mask is sufficient. Pay attention to the size — it should fit snugly but not press. The main sign of a good mask is the absence of gaps between the mask and the jacket collar.
The protection class is measured in Newtons (N). For training, 350N is enough; for competitions, 800N is required. The jacket should not restrict movement in the weapon arm. Many beginners start with a complete set (jacket + breeches + mask) — it is usually cheaper.
The best choice for beginners. Lightweight, with a flexible blade. Great for learning the basics of technique.
Heavier, the whole body is a target. Suitable for those who like tactical and slow duels.
Fast, dynamic fencing. Requires a lot of movement and good reflexes.
The glove must have a reinforced cuff. Always try it on with your weapon. Shoes for fencing have a flat sole and a rubber heel to soften lunges. Do not use ordinary sneakers — they lack lateral fixation.
